For sanity’s sake, Coach Bob Dunivant would have preferred a more calm night.

His Burroughs Indians had just beaten Schurr, 41-29, Friday night at Heaman Stadium, and you got the impression that Dunivant was more relieved than pleased.

Untimely turnovers and a feisty opponent that wouldn’t let up can drive a coach insane.

“That got a little scary,” said Dunivant, whose 5-0-1 team is now legitimate Foothill League contender after going winless in league play a year ago. “I’m elated at our effort to come back. There was so much pressure on us.

“I told them (his team) if we can get by Schurr, we got a chance.”

The Indians made it through their league opener with a balanced offensive attack.

At intermission, Burroughs led, 14-9, despite itself, then scored 27 second-half points to overcome Schurr.

Burroughs’ impressive opening drive was ruined when a poor center snap doomed kicker Todd Pam’s 36-yard field goal attempt. The scrambling kicker’s desperation pass went incomplete in the end zone.

Burroughs, however, then drove 61 yards on five plays to score. Doug Dragomer went in from the three-yard line.

Quarterback Jeff Barrett later threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Brian Kaloustain, but the Burroughs quarterback fumbled in the end zone with 1:45 left in the half to make it 14-9.

The Indians trailed, 16-14, midway in the third quarter before Barrett overcame a sore elbow to lead the Indians the rest of the way. Barrett, who was 9 of 11 for 171 yards, threw two more touchdowns in the final half.

Dragomer’s 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown also erased a 23-21 deficit in the fourth period for Burroughs.

For Schurr, quarterback Joe Cytert led a big play option offense that scored on three short runs and a lob pass to stay in the game.
