COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Arizona East Roundup : Penn State, Getting Ready for Alabama, Beats Syracuse, 42-3

Blair Thomas, Tim Manoa and D.J. Dozier led a rushing attack that gained 434 yards as sixth-ranked Penn State defeated Syracuse, 42-3, Saturday at University Park, Pa.

Manoa scored on runs of 11 and 3 yards, and Dozier dived 1 yard to give Penn State a 21-0 third-period lead, and Thomas raced 38 yards as the Nittany Lions (6-0) tuned up for next Saturday’s meeting against No. 2 Alabama at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Syracuse (1-5) lost to Penn State for the 16th straight year. It was Penn State’s 17th consecutive regular-season victory.

Thomas carried five times for 132 yards, including a 92-yard run that set up a one-yard touchdown by fullback Steve Smith. Manoa had 96 rushing yards, and Dozier 84.

Dozier has 2,836 career rushing yards, third best in Penn State history. Dozier moved past Matt Suhey (2,818), now of the Chicago Bears.

Florida 15, Rutgers 3--The Gators won at East Rutherford, N.J., behind three field goals by Jeff Dawson and a 36-yard touchdown pass from Rodney Brewer to Ricky Nattiel.

Rutgers sophomore quarterback Scott Erney, in his first collegiate start, was intercepted three times and completed only 13 of 32 passes for 114 yards.

The victory was the second straight for Florida (3-4), while the loss was the second straight for Rutgers (3-2-1) after a 3-0-1 start. Penn State defeated the Scarlet Knights, 31-6, two weeks ago in a game in which quarterback Joe Gagliardi suffered a separated shoulder and was lost for the season.

Penn 30, Navy 26--Quarterback Jim Crocicchia threw for four second-half touchdowns, three of them to tight end Brent Novoselsky, to lead the undefeated Quakers at Annapolis, Md.

The touchdown pass that put Penn (5-0) ahead to stay was a 33-yarder to Novoselsky with less than three minutes left in the game. After a Navy fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Crocicchia put the game out of reach with a 29-yard scoring pass to running back Jim Bruni that gave the Division I-AA Quakers a 30-20 lead. The Midshipmen are 3-2.

Holy Cross 17, Army 14--Billy Young kicked a 38-yard field goal with 3:58 left to lead the Crusaders to victory at West Point, N.Y.

Holy Cross, a Division I-AA school, is 6-0. Army is 3-3.

Army passed up a potential tying field goal on fourth and 14 on the Holy Cross 17 with 21 seconds left. Instead, quarterback Tory Crawford sprinted out and was stopped by tackle Andy Martin for a three-yard loss.

Army safety Chance Conner ran back an interception 49 yards for a touchdown that tied the score, 14-14, with 7:49 left in the game. But on the ensuing Holy Cross drive, Conner was called for pass interference, giving the Crusaders a first down on the Army 38 and setting the stage for Young’s winning field goal.

Cornell 27, Brown 9--Tight end Stuart Mitchell caught a 22-yard touchdown pass and set up two one-yard scoring runs by Jeff Johnson as the Big Red won an Ivy League game at Ithaca, N.Y.

Cornerback Jim Frontero added a 74-yard touchdown interception return for Cornell, 4-1 overall and 3-0 in league play. Cornell is tied for first with Penn. Brown is 3-2 and 2-2.

Boston College 41, Louisville 7--Troy Stradford rushed for 171 yards, and quarterback Sean Halloran passed for 167 yards as the Eagles (3-3) cruised to victory over the Cardinals (2-4) at Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Lehigh 48, Princeton 28--Tailback Lee Blum scored four touchdowns, and Mark McGowan passed for three as the Engineers won at Bethlehem, Pa.

Blum scored on runs of 25, 14 and 6 yards and caught a 64-yard touchdown pass for Lehigh (2-4). Princeton is 1-4.

Harvard 42, Dartmouth 26--Sophomore quarterback Tom Yohe ran for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns and also passed for a touchdown to lead the Crimson in an Ivy League game at Hanover, N.H. Harvard is 2-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. Dartmouth is 0-5 and 0-2.

Yale 47, Columbia 0--Sophomore tailback Kevin Brice ran for two touchdowns, one on a 65-yard gallop late in the first half, as the Bulldogs sent the Lions to their 26th straight loss in an Ivy League game at New Haven, Conn.

It was Yale’s second consecutive victory after an 0-3 start this season, and evened its Ivy League record at 1-1. The Lions are 0-5 and 0-4.

Bucknell 40, Colgate 39--Jim Given passed five yards to Mike Morrow with 52 seconds remaining, and Steve Barimo added the winning extra point to give the Bison a Colonial League victory over the Red Raiders at Lewisburg, Pa.

Given, who set school records with 36 completions in 62 attempts for 350 yards, drove Bucknell (3-3, 1-0) 74 yards in 10 plays for the winning score.

Colgate (0-6, 0-3) returned the ensuing kickoff to its 45 and set up for a 44-yard field goal attempt, but a fumbled snap forced holder Mark Hulbert to pass 18 yards to Jeff Crowell, who was tackled on the Bucknell nine-yard line as time ran out.
