Eric Kramer passed to Nasrallah Worthen for a 37-yard touchdown pass play with 1:01 left Saturday, and North Carolina State held on to defeat 18th-ranked and previously unbeaten North Carolina, 35-34, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Chapel Hill, N.C.

On the play, which capped a 98-yard drive, defenders Skeet Baldwin and Walter Bailey collided, and Worthen raced to the end zone untouched.

But it didn’t put the game away.

North Carolina took the ensuing kickoff from its 32, and Mark Maye completed five straight passes, including a 13-yard scoring pass to Quint Smith with eight seconds left to bring the score to 35-34. But tight end Dave Truitt had to go to his knees to catch the two-point conversion attempt and was ruled down.

The subsequent onside kick failed, and N.C. State celebrated its first victory in the series after seven straight losses. The Wolfpack is 4-1-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC. The Tar Heels are 4-1-1 and 2-1.

The game produced 993 yards of offense and 54 first downs. N.C. State picked up 503 total yards.

The Tar Heels (4-1-1, 2-1) had appeared ready to take command when they moved from their 15 to the Wolfpack 2, primarily on the passing of Maye, a reserve quarterback who sat out last season with shoulder problems. But backup tailback Eric Starr fumbled at the 2, and Ray Agnew fell on it for N.C. State, setting up the Wolfpack’s game-winning drive.

Maye, a junior in his third start, completed 25 of 33 passes for 311 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kramer completed 17 of 27 for 279 yards, including 10 of 14 for 172 yards in the second half.

Clemson 35, Duke 3--At Clemson, S.C., cornerback Delton Hall returned an interception 67 yards for a touchdown to key a determined defense for the 17th-ranked Tigers.

Terrence Flagler was Clemson’s offensive star in the Atlantic Coast Conference game, rushing for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns. Flagler, who has gained 489 yards in the last three games, scored on runs of six yards in the first quarter and three yards in the third period.

Flagler’s three-game rushing total is a Clemson record, breaking the mark of 479 set by Clint Austin in 1982.

Clemson tailback Kenny Flowers also broke a school record. He had 41 yards rushing to give him a career total of 2,611 yards, breaking the mark of 2,571 set by Buddy Gore in 1968.

The victory left the Tigers at 5-1 overall and atop the ACC with a 3-0 record. Duke is 3-3 and 1-1.

Temple 29, Virginia Tech 13--Paul Palmer, the NCAA’s leading rusher, had 44 carries for 239 yards at Norfolk, Va., to lead the Owls to their fifth victory.

Lee Saltz passed for two touchdowns, and Bill Wright added field goals of 38 yards, 22 yards and 24 yards as Temple improved to 5-2. Virginia Tech is 4-2-1.

Palmer’s output was the most against Virginia Tech since Barry Redden of Richmond rushed for 233 yards in 1980.

Richmond is 3-3. The Keydets are 1-5.

Florida St. 59, Wichita St. 3--Junior quarterback Danny McManus, making his second start of the season, passed for three first-half touchdowns before sitting out the second half at Tallahassee, Fla.

Peter Tom Willis, Chip Ferguson and Alan Stewart shared quarterback duties for the Seminoles (3-2-1) in the second half.

Wake Forest 27, Maryland 21--Mike Elkins passed for two touchdowns, and Chip Rives ran for two more as the Demon Deacons beat the Terrapins in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at College Park, Md.

The Terrapins (3-3 and 0-2) rallied from a 27-0 halftime deficit on three touchdown passes by Dan Henning, but the late bid ended when A.J. Greene intercepted a Henning pass in the end zone with 58 seconds left.
