COLLEGE FOOTBALL : PCAA Roundup : Graham Leads 49ers Past New Mexico St., 38-7

Jeff Graham passed for three touchdowns, Michael Roberts rushed for 126 yards in 16 carries and Kwante Hampton had a 85-yard punt-return touchdown as Cal State Long Beach rolled to a 38-7 victory over New Mexico State Saturday night before 12,931 in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Las Cruces, N.M.

For Hampton, the leading punt returner in the NCAA, it was the second time this season he has returned one 85 yards. His other 85-yarder came against UCLA.

The 49ers, 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the PCAA, led, 28-0, with 5:45 left in the first half. New Mexico State is 1-7 and 1-4. The Aggies’ only victory came against Cal State Fullerton in their second game of the season.

Long Beach was penalized 13 times for 130 yards but still rolled up 539 yards in total offense. The Aggies had 289 yards in total offense.

Graham completed 15 of 24 passes for 243 yards, with two of his three touchdown passes going to Charles Lockett.

Lockett, who missed the previous Saturday’s game against Fullerton because of a groin pull, caught 6 passes for 87 yards. His touchdown receptions covered 13 and 15 yards.

New Mexico State scored its only touchdown with 1:03 left in the half, as Jim Miller passed 12 yards to Gene Egan, capping an 80-yard, 15-play drive.

Fresno St. 10, Pacific 9--Barry Belli’s 47-yard field goal with eight seconds left lifted the Bulldogs to a comeback victory at Fresno.

Belli’s game-winner was set up by Kelly Skipper’s 18-yard run with 1:31 left, which put the ball at the Pacific 34. Tailback James Williams carried twice for four yards before Belli came on.

Fresno is 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the PCAA. Pacific is 4-3 and 2-1.

Bulldog quarterback Kevin Sweeney, in pursuit of Doug Flutie’s all-time NCAA passing mark of 10,579 yards, finished the game with only 107 yards. He is 816 behind Flutie.

Pacific, using a wishbone attack, had 259 rushing yards. Tim Richardson led the Tigers with 90 yards in 14 carries.

Field goals by Kevin Norgaard gave the Tigers a 9-0 lead in the third quarter. But the Bulldogs came back in the fourth quarter on a three-yard touchdown run by Skipper, who finished with 84 yards, and Belli’s game-winning kick.

Sweeney, who completed 8 of 14 passes, threw two passes in the second half as he was hampered by a shoulder injury.

The 79-yard drive on which Skipper scored contained 14 plays, all runs. Sweeney was expected to practice this week and start again next week, however.

San Jose St. 23, Nevada Las Vegas 20--Sergio Olivarez kicked a 46-yard field goal with nine seconds left to give the Spartans a victory at Las Vegas.

The Spartans are 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the PCAA. UNLV is 4-3 and 1-2.

Olivarez’s third field goal of the game capped a second-half comeback by the Spartans that included a 17-point third-quarter explosion set up by two UNLV turnovers. There were 13 turnovers in the game.

Kenny Jackson scored back-to-back touchdowns after a Rebel fumble and interception, and Olivarez kicked a 27-yard field goal to put the Spartans ahead for the first time at 20-17.

A 45-yard field goal by Las Vegas’ Daren Libonati tied the score at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
