Share

Anaheim High School quarterback Ernest Johnston threw an 83-yard touchdown pass to Robert Ferrington with 3:06 remaining Saturday night to lift the Colonists to a 14-9 upset victory over Western in the Orange League opener for both schools in Anaheim’s Handel Stadium.

Ferrington caught the pass near the Pioneer 30-yard line, shook off two Western defenders and continued into the end zone, as the Colonists completed their fourth-quarter comeback. Anaheim had scored earlier in the period on Johnston’s 23-yard touchdown pass to Kha Hoang. Robert Aldaz kicked both extra points. Anaheim (3-3) has won three games in a row.

Western (3-3), which has lost two straight, scored in the first quarter when Toby Howell recovered a fumble in the end zone. The Pioneers added a 31-yard field goal by Dave Brown in the second quarter. But Western quarterback Mike Huy was intercepted three times, and the Pioneers were penalized 15 times for 100 yards.
