The future of Lefty Driesell, the University of Maryland basketball coach who has been under fire since Bias’ death, reportedly is being negotiated this week. There have been reports that Driesell will take over fund-raising for a private booster club, but the man who holds that position, Tom Fields, 68, says he is not yet ready to step down.

Fields said reports that Driesell might take over his job at the Maryland Education Foundation have been rumored since Driesell signed a 10-year contract in 1984.

“They’re probably thinking down the road,” Fields said. “There’ll be a resolution this week,” Driesell’s attorney, Edward Bennett Williams, said.

Officials reportedly have been looking for a way to either buy out Driesell’s contract or find another job for him at the school.

Driesell’s contract calls for him to coach the Terrapins’ basketball team for four more years, then serve as an administrator for five years.
