Marina 33, Ocean View 7--Coming off an upset victory of Edison, Marina seemed ripe for a letdown. Though the Vikings struggled for most of the game against the Seahawks, they came up with enough big plays in the fourth quarter to win and remain in first place.

“We didn’t put it all together like last week but we we played a decent game and came out on top,” Marina quarterback Rick Vanderriet said after rushing for two touchdowns and passing for 105 yards.

The Vikings (2-0, 2-5) held a shaky 16-7 lead in the fourth quarter before Brian Bosse returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown that broke the game open.

Three plays later, Scott McGlinchey blocked a punt at the Ocean View 18-yard line to set up Vanderriet’s second touchdown run.

“We played just good enough to win,” Marina Coach Chris Ramsey said. “We didn’t seem to be concentrating on key situations. We weren’t sharp mentally but physically we were all right.”

John Taylor and Tyler Aldons came up with fumble recoveries to help stop Ocean View. The Seahawks (0-2, 2-5) started quickly by completing two passes for 123 yards and a touchdown but were stymied the rest of the game.

The passes--68 yards from Mike Spence to Victor Gutierrez for a score and 55 yards from Spence to Phil Bowen--didn’t catch Marina off guard.

“It was very frustrating because we were prepared for them to pass,” Ramsey said. “We seemed to be fine and then all of a sudden, we would make a mistake and bog down.”

Sean Maguda’s running helped Marina control the game’s pace. Maguda gained 115 yards in 19 carries.

Ocean View, which has lost three straight, looked sharp early. On the Seahawks’ touchdown, Spence rolled right and had plenty of time to spot Gutierrez streaking down the left sideline. Later in the first quarter, Spence threw to Bowen, who stopped to make the catch though closely defended, shook loose a would-be tackler and ran toward the end zone only to lose the ball out of bounds at the Marina 19. But the Seahawks failed to score and did not threaten the rest of the game.
