Payne Stewart shot a five-under-par 65 Saturday and assured himself of a $300,000 payday while pulling into a tie with Ben Crenshaw for the second-round lead at 132 in the $1-million Vantage golf tournament at San Antonio.

Crenshaw, who scored his first professional victory in this event 13 years ago when it was called the Texas Open, had a 67.

Stewart was assured of second place, worth $300,000, in the season-long Vantage Cup standings when Andy Bean shot a 68 for a two-round total of 141 and failed to qualify for the final two rounds. Bean finished third in the Vantage Cup, earning $200,000.

PGA champion Bob Tway shot a 69 and also failed to qualify for the final two rounds. He has only next week’s tournament at Tucson in which to overtake Greg Norman for the year’s money title. Tway, who has been attempting to catch the Australian for six weeks, remains $5,516 behind Norman’s record total of $653,296.

Tway, however, has $500,000 worth of consolation for clinching the Vantage Cup. That sum doesn’t count in the PGA money standings.

Crenshaw and Stewart have a one-shot lead over Larry Mize, D.A. Weibring, Phil Blackmar, Ken Brown of Scotland and Kenny Knox.

Greg Norman shot a course-record, seven-under-par 65 to win his sixth straight tournament, taking the South Australian Open at Adelaide, Australia, by three strokes.

Norman had a total of 283 after starting the final round three strokes off the pace. David Graham shot a 71 for a 286 total and second place.

Brent Franklin shot a two-under-par 68, and teammate Mark Brewer added a 69 at Caracas, Venezuela, as Canada overtook the United States and won its first World Amateur championship.
