A 29-year-old man who allegedly pointed a gun at two police officers was shot to death by one of them after they were called to an apartment complex by the man’s neighbors, a police spokesman said Sunday.

Police Lt. John Rees said the shooting was being investigated by the department, as well as by the district attorney’s special investigations unit.

Rees said the two officers, who were not identified, were sent to a 25-unit apartment complex in the 800 block of North Hillside Street shortly before midnight Saturday after a caller reported that a neighbor, identified as Paul Mark Braunger, had been waving a pistol.

Rees said the two officers confronted Braunger, who was shot once after he allegedly pointed the gun at the two officers.

Braunger, an X-ray technician, lived alone in the apartment, Rees said.

Paramedics treated the wounded man at the scene before he was taken to Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier, where he was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m., police said.

Rees said an autopsy would be performed on Braunger’s body today. He said Police Chief Ronald B. Meehan had requested that no other information of the shooting incident be released until today.

“I’ve been instructed not to give out any other information. The names of the officers involved also will not be revealed until (this) morning,” Rees said.
