Local News in Brief : Controlled Burn North of Simi Goes Off Well

Share

Fire crews from Ventura and Los Angeles counties completed a 3,000-acre controlled burn of brush in the mountains north of Simi Valley Tuesday, fire officials said.

Unlike a previous controlled burn that was ignited a few miles to the east in August, this one remained under control, said John Haugh, a County Fire Department spokesman.

The August fire, fanned by unexpected winds, jumped beyond the planned boundaries and sent a pall of smoke through the Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement complex.

For Tuesday’s fire, which had been planned for a year, “the weather conditions were just right,” Haugh said.

Thirteen fire crews, two helicopters and other equipment kept the blaze within a perimeter that had been burned Monday, he said. By 4 p.m., the fire had burned itself out.
