A Tuesday morning fire caused an estimated $125,000 damage to a restaurant and an adjoining dress shop in a Newhall shopping center.

The fire, blamed on a faulty motor in an ice cream machine, broke out about 8:30 a.m. in the kitchen of the Casa Grande restaurant in 23500 block of Lyons Avenue, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Jerry Dillman said.

Seven engine companies extinguished the fire in half an hour before it could spread through a common attic to other stores in the center, Dillman said.

The fire caused about $50,000 in damage to the restaurant building and $25,000 to its contents. Smoke and water damage to the contents of a dress shop next door was estimated at $50,000, Dillman said.
