A moderate earthquake rattled the desert near here Friday morning but no damage was reported, and officials near the epicenter said they not only didn’t feel it but got no calls about it.

The 6:27 a.m. temblor measured 4.0 on the Richter scale and was centered 46 miles north-northwest of Barstow, according to Dennis Meredith, spokesman for California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

The quake, which normally would be capable of moderate damage, was in such a remote area of the Mojave Desert, 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles, that apparently nobody felt it.
