Reseda Buries N. Hollywood in 50-0 Win

Heading into Friday night’s game at North Hollywood, the Reseda coaching staff was undecided about who would start at quarterback.

Would it be senior Donnie Grant, the season’s projected starter who had missed all but one game because of a variety of injuries?

Would it be senior Mike Lance, who was 5-0 while filling in for Grant, but who struggled in a brief relief appearance in last week’s upset to Sylmar?

Or would it be sophomore Coley Kyman, perhaps the team’s best passer, who had also seen action at various times this season?

What Reseda found out was that with the Reseda defense, it doesn’t really matter who plays quarterback for the Regents: When a team only allows an average of one touchdown per game, anybody will do just fine.

“It doesn’t matter,” said Reseda assistant Mike Stone before the game. “Not tonight. We just want to ram it down their throats.”

With Lance throwing just six passes in the game, and running backs Chris Vargas and Ronald Wilkinson handling the ground attack, Reseda rammed its way to a 50-0 blowout over the Huskies in a Pac 8 League contest at North Hollywood.

The win kept the Regents (6-1, 4-1) in a tie for first place in the Pac 8.

“That is probably the most points we have scored since I’ve been here,” said Reseda Coach Joel Schaeffer, in his ninth year at the Regent helm. “I have been looking forward to playing their offense all season. Our defense really did it for us out there tonight.”

Reseda scored early after Sam Edwards intercepted Husky quarterback James Crump’s first pass of the game at the North Hollywood 28. Six plays later, Chris Vargas scored from three yards out--his first of three touchdowns--for a 7-0 Regent lead.

Minutes later, after the Regent defense had stopped another Husky drive, Wilkinson, who had a punt return for a touchdown nullified by a penalty last week, fielded the Husky punt and sped 63 yards up the sideline for a 14-0 Reseda.

After the Regents again held the Huskies following the kickoff, running back Darrell Armstrong finished an eight-play, 67-yard drive by breaking loose for a 25-yard touchdown run, giving the Regents an insurmountable 21-0 lead at the half.

Reseda kept the injury-plagued North Hollywood (4-2-1, 2-2-1) attack from doing much of anything. Chip Grant was held to just 22 yards and Mark Spiwak ran for just 61.

The second half was more of the same, as Reseda’s offensive line ripped huge holes in the Husky defense. Vargas scored twice in the third quarter on runs of 29 and 3 yards, and finished the game with 98 yards on 11 carries.

Lance later scored on a quarterback sneak to put the Regents up, 40-0.

Reseda’s final score came with just seconds left when running back George Campbell scored on a 40-yard run. To add even more insult, Reseda kicker George Konstantinopoulos ran for a two-point conversion.
