LOCAL ELECTION COVERAGE RUNDOWN

Locally televised election coverage begins today at 3 p.m. on KCBS Channel 2 and will continue at intermittent intervals across the dial until the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

The initial 90-minute broadcast on KCBS will be anchored by John Schubeck and Tritia Toyota. Channel 2 also will carry 6 1/2 consecutive hours of national and local results from 5 to 11:30 p.m. The station’s local updates will be presented at 23 and 53 minutes past each hour, with a half-hour report scheduled at 8 p.m.

KNBC Channel 4 will cover the election with brief reports interspersed among the prime-time programs “Matlock” and “Crime Story,” which are due to start at 8:01 and 9:01 p.m., respectively, following one-minute NBC updates. The station is scheduled to air other reports from 8:26 to 8:35 p.m., 9 to 9:10 p.m. and 9:26 to 9:35 p.m. Following the conclusion of “Crime Story” at 10:10 p.m., Kelly Lange and Keith Morrison will anchor extended coverage until 11:30 p.m.

ABC will offer a 90-minute election telecast anchored by Peter Jennings starting at 6:30 p.m. on Channels 7, 3 and 42. KABC-TV Channel 7 will have two local updates, from 8:30 to 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The station will televise “Who’s the Boss?” at 8 p.m. and “Moonlighting” at 10.

The day’s elections also will be the subject of “Nightline,” due at 11:30 p.m. on Channels 10 and 42 and 12:30 a.m. on Channel 7.

Each of the local independent stations plans entertainment programming with intermittent election results.

KTLA Channel 5 will present live remote reports during its broadcast of the movie “Rocky” from 7:30 to 10 p.m. The film will precede Channel 5’s election coverage on its 10 p.m. newscast.

KHJ Channel 9 will provide one update during halftime of a televised pro basketball game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Seattle SuperSonics, which begins at 7:30 p.m. The game will be followed by a half-hour of election coverage at 10 p.m., with subsequent news cut-ins every 15 minutes starting at 10:45 p.m. and continuing until at least midnight.

KTTV Channel 11 will offer six two-minute election inserts during the station’s pair of Chuck Norris movies airing at 7 p.m. (“A Force of One”) and 9 p.m. (“The Octagon”). There will be full coverage on the station’s regular half-hour newscast at midnight.

KCOP Channel 13 plans to update viewers during two breaks in the miniseries “Hold the Dream,” at approximately 8:45 and 9:30 p.m., and then will have additional news during its 10 p.m. newscast.

Meanwhile, KVCR Channel 24 will have a half-hour report at 7:30 p.m. and KOCE Channel 50 will present a four-hour election installment of “Jim Cooper’s Orange County,” from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m.

Spanish-language station KMEX Channel 34 plans a half-hour of election totals at 10:30 p.m.

On cable TV, CNN plans continuous coverage from 3 p.m. until 2 a.m. C-SPAN reports can be seen from 3 p.m. until midnight.
