Arredondo Scores Unanimous Decision Over Mamby at Olympic
Former world champion Rene Arredondo of Mexico scored a unanimous 10-round decision over another former titleholder, Saoul Mamby of New York, in a junior welterweight bout Thursday night at the Olympic Auditorium.
Arredondo, rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Council, knocked Mamby down in the third round with a right cross. It was the first time in 59 fights that Mamby, 39, had been floored.
Mamby, 143, finished strong to win the final two rounds, but it was not enough to gain the decision over Arredondo, who is 14 years his junior.
With the victory, Arredondo improved his record to 38-3. Mamby fell to 36-18-5.
Arredondo, 141, lost the WBC junior welterweight title in July to Tsuyoshi Hamada of Japan.
