Sabres’ Bowman Steps Down, Says He Will Coach No More

Scotty Bowman, the winningest coach in National Hockey League history, stepped down again as coach of the Buffalo Sabres Thursday and said he would coach no more.

Bowman, who guided the Montreal Canadiens to five Stanley Cup titles in the 1970s, was replaced by his assistant, Craig Ramsay.

“My coaching era, or whatever you want to call it, is finished,” Bowman said. “I’ve had enough.”

Bowman retains the duties of general manager and director of hockey operations. His coaching record with the Sabres, Canadiens and St. Louis Blues was 739-327-210.

Bowman’s resignation came hours after the Boston Bruins, who lost, 8-3, here Wednesday night, fired Coach Butch Goring. Mike Milbury and Terry O’Reilly were expected to be temporarily in charge of the Bruins, but no permanent replacement was immediately named.
