NBA Roundup : English, Walker Lead Nuggets Past Jazz, 135-121

Alex English scored 36 points, and Darrell Walker came off the bench to add 24 as the Denver Nuggets beat the Utah Jazz, 135-121, Thursday night at Denver.

Denver guard Fat Lever had a triple-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists.

The Nuggets, playing without injured centers Wayne Cooper and Danny Schayes, often used a lineup with four guards against Utah’s front line. Denver’s 6-7 guard, Bill Hanzlik, played center on defense and added 22 points.

Denver broke open the game in the second quarter when Walker, who had only 21 points in the Nuggets’ first three games, came in and scored 15 points before halftime.

Walker made all five of his shots and five straight free throws as Denver built a 65-55 halftime lead.

Karl Malone scored 19 points for Utah, which played without injured scoring leader Darrell Griffith.

Dallas 147, Seattle 124--Al Wood came off the bench to score 25 points, and Mark Aguirre added 24 as the Mavericks turned back the SuperSonics at Seattle.

The Mavericks made 14 of 18 shots in building a 44-27 lead after one period. Aguirre and Wood each scored 10 points in the quarter.

Xavier McDaniel led the Sonics with 28 points, and Alton Lister added 20.

Aguirre was involved in a scuffle with Sonic forward Maurice Lucas, who took a swing after the two engaged in a shoving match. Aguirre was removed from the game by Coach Dick Motta.

In a halftime ceremony, Seattle retired No. 32 in honor of Fred Brown, the Sonics’ all-time scoring leader, who averaged 15.2 points a game in 13 seasons.

New York 106, Sacramento 95--Bill Cartwright scored 21 points and led a third-period run that carried the Knicks past the Kings at Sacramento for their first victory in five games.

The Knicks also broke an eight-game road losing streak dating to last season.

Cartwright had two baskets, and Rory Sparrow added two baskets as the Knicks turned a 52-51 deficit into a 63-54 lead. New York built its lead to 82-67 in the final period.

Sacramento narrowed the margin to 96-86 with 2:05 left, but four foul shots by Cartwright and a basket by Gerald Wilkins, who added 20 points for the Knicks, put the game out of reach.

Derek Smith scored 26 points for the Kings.
