Southern Section Volleyball : Newport Harbor, CdM Victorious

Fourth-seeded Newport Harbor defeated Culver City, 15-2, 15-5, 15-6, in a first-round Southern Section 5-A volleyball match at Newport Harbor. Newport Harbor (15-2) will play Laguna Beach, which beat St. Joseph, 15-9, 16-14, 15-4.

Corona del Mar defeated Santa Monica, 15-12, 15-13, 15-12. Laurie Wooten had 17 kills and Laurie Sawrin had 15.

Woodbridge defeated Estancia, 15-5, 15-8, 15-13. Woodbridge plays the winner of today’s match between Mater Dei and Santa Barbara.

In first-round 3-A play:

El Modena beat Diamond Bar, 1-15, 15-3, 15-13, 16-14. Senior Christine Martinez had 16 blocks. Redondo defeated Foothill, 15-13, 15-4, 15-8. And La Habra beat Moreno Valley, 10-15, 13-15, 15-3, 15-13, 15-6.

In first-round 2-A action:

Magnolia defeated Claremont, 15-11, 15-3, 15-6. Magnolia (15-1) was led by Cindy Gossmer, the Orange League Most Valuable Player. Gossmer had 29 assists. Valencia (10-8) beat Riverside Notre Dame, 8-15, 15-12, 15-7, 15-11. And Western defeated Corona, 15-9, 9-15, 15-3, 2-15, 15-9.
