Quick action by firefighters Friday saved $13 million worth of library books in Santa Monica from a blaze in a neighboring warehouse, authorities said.

No injuries were reported, but the blaze in a two-story building at 1610 26th St. caused $150,000 damage, fire dispatchers said.

About half of the books from the Santa Monica Public Library, which is being remodeled because of asbestos problems, are being stored next door in an warehouse owned by the System Development Corp., Police Lt. Jim Dawson said.

Firefighters doused the flames, which began shortly after 2 a.m., in about 40 minutes.
