Standout split end J.A. Ambrose and starting offensive tackle Jay Schimmel are among four University of Mississippi football players sidelined as part of a continuing investigation into alleged violations of National Collegiate Athletic Assn. rules.
Chancellor Gerald Turner confirmed only that fewer than 10 players had been declared ineligible. He declined to identify any of those involved.
Sources close to the investigation were quoted as saying that besides Ambrose and Schimmel, defensive backs Derrick Lindsay and A.D. Matthews had been suspended. The report said that four redshirted players also may be declared ineligible as the investigation continues.
In Biloxi, Miss., television station WLOX quoted other sources as saying that the investigation involved 46 allegations, including gifts of cash, automobiles and clothing to athletes.
