PREP FOOTBALL : South Coast League : Marinovich Leads Capistrano Valley to 41-14 Victory

Junior quarterback Todd Marinovich threw three touchdown passes Friday night to lead Capistrano Valley High School to a 41-14 victory over Mission Viejo in a South Coast League game at Mission Viejo High.

The loss dropped Mission Viejo out of a first-place tie with El Toro and into a second-place tie with Capistrano Valley. El Toro, the No. 1-ranked team in Orange County, leads the league. The Chargers play Mission Viejo Friday.

Capistrano Valley took a 21-0 lead and then almost let Mission Viejo tie the game.

Mission Viejo (3-1 in league, 5-4 overall) scored just before halftime on a 90-yard drive to cut Capistrano Valley’s lead to 21-7. The Diablos had only 13 yards in total offense before the drive.

The Diablos shocked Capistrano Valley (3-1, 6-3) early in the third quarter with a 31-yard pass from wide receiver Danny Reed to wide receiver Rick Angle on a fake reverse to make the score 21-14.

Two possessions later, the Diablos drove to the Capistrano Valley 20 but Capistrano Valley’s Marcell Durand intercepted a pass at the three and returned it to the Cougar 38.

Capistrano Valley’s David Rawson returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

El Toro 36, Dana Hills 8--The Chargers, the No. 1 rated team in Orange County, rolled easily over the Dolphins at Dana Hills behind three touchdowns by running back Aly Diaz.

El Toro (4-0, 9-0) scored the first three times it had the ball. The Chargers drove 61 yards on their first possession, with Diaz accounting for 41 rushing yards in 4 carries. He finished the drive with a nine-yard touchdown run.

El Toro scored a two-point conversion on a fake kick, with holder Scott Miller passing to David Nemeth in the end zone.

Charger quarterback Bret Johnson capped the next El Toro possession with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Diaz.

On El Toro’s first possession of the second quarter it went 60 yards in 11 plays, with running back Scott Ross carrying it in from the one-yard line.

The Chargers’ defense completely dominated Dana Hills (1-3, 3-6), and didn’t allow a first down in the first half.

El Toro added two touchdowns in the second half, the first coming on a two-yard run by Johnson. Diaz closed out the scoring for the Chargers on a 69-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Dana Hills got the last points of the game, on a four-yard run by Jason Burden with 4:50 left.
