For almost 30 minutes Saturday, it seemed history might repeat itself.

Oregon State, a 23-point underdog against 13th-ranked Washington, held a 6-0 lead at Corvallis, Ore. A replay of last season’s stunning Oregon State victory over the Huskies seemed possible.

But it didn’t happen.

Instead, Chris Chandler threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Huskies, who play UCLA next week, rallied for a 28-12 Pacific 10 victory.

Chandler said the effects of last week’s loss to Arizona State lingered early in Saturday’s game.

“The reason we played badly in the first half was because we had a bad week of practice,” the Washington quarterback said. “We had a hard time coming back from last week’s loss.”

The Huskies (7-2 overall, 4-2 in the conference) took command of the game with Chandler’s two touchdown passes in the third quarter. Chandler completed 12 of 16 passes for 186 yards. He also ran for 37 yards.

The victory was the 100th for Don James at Washington, surpassing the school record of 99 held by Jim Owens.

Oregon State (2-7, 1-5) in the Pac-10, took the lead on field goals of 37 and 19 yards by Marty Breen.

The Beavers’ Erik Wilhelm, who led the Pac-10 in total offense going into the game, completed 28 of 45 passes for 238 yards. After having six passes picked off last week against UCLA, he didn’t throw an interception against the Huskies.

Arizona 31, Washington State 6--At Pullman, Wash., Pac-10 rushing leader David Adams of Arizona gained a career-high 182 yards as the No. 17 Wildcats used five turnovers and a blocked punt to stop Washington State.

Adams, a senior tailback, carried 27 times before being shaken up in the third quarter.

Adams’ previous single-game best was 155 yards.

Arizona (7-2, 4-2), with senior quarterback Andy Crouch making his first career start, stayed in bowl contention. Washington State fell to 3-5-1 and 2-4-1.
