Nebraska, Trailing 14-7 at Halftime, Finally Gains Control for 35-14 Win Over Iowa State

Nebraska’s football team made up its mind at halftime that it wasn’t going to be pushed around anymore.

The heavily favored Cornhuskers trailed Iowa State, 14-7, at halftime of Saturday’s Big Eight Conference game. But they scored four touchdowns in the final 18 minutes and rolled to a 35-14 victory.

“At halftime, I thought they were knocking us off the ball,” Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said. “We appeared to be a little bit flat. So at halftime, we decided we had to control the line of scrimmage.”

Ken Kaelin scored the go-ahead touchdown for the seventh-ranked Cornhuskers late in the third quarter after Iowa State botched a punt. Quarterback Steve Taylor scored twice for Nebraska, and Kaelin and teammate Tyreese Knox each rushed for 126 yards.

“We didn’t take Iowa State lightly coming into the game. We just didn’t play with as much intensity as we should have in the first half,” Osborne said.

In beating Iowa State for the ninth straight time, the Cornhuskers raised their record to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big Eight. The Cyclones are 5-4 and 2-3.
