Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Wayne Fontes denied a report that indicated he is in line for the University of California football coaching job to be vacated by Joe Kapp.

Commentator Beano Cook of ESPN, the cable sports network, said Saturday night that Fontes was among the leading candidates to replace Kapp, whose contract will not be renewed.
