10,000-Acre Brush Fire Near Camarillo Burning Itself Out : Firefighters Winning Control of 3 Southland, Carmel Blazes
A 10,000-acre blaze that seared brittle-dry brush and burned citrus groves outside Camarillo today was burning itself out, with firefighters predicting they would have it halted by sundown.
Another brush fire in Chatsworth was declared contained this morning after blackening about 100 acres.
No buildings were threatened in the San Fernando Valley fire, which started before dawn, and city and county firefighters were expected to remain at the scene throughout the day to prevent flare-ups.
The Camarillo fire had threatened several ranch homes late Monday, but firefighters successfully headed off the danger, said Ventura County fire spokeswoman Shonna Matthews.
About 350 firefighters were on the line today, backed by another 350 support workers, and two water-dropping helicopters made runs at the fire 55 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
A broken power pole caused the fire, said Ventura County Fire Department spokeswoman Liz Pickles. She said investigators did not describe how the pole was broken, or if a fallen power line or sparks from lines started the blaze.
The flames were reported just before 11 a.m. Monday in dense brush near South Mountain.
