Irvine : Study Is Ordered on Copter Flight Paths

Share

The City Council has requested a study on safety and noise problems caused by military helicopters that fly over the city.

Assistant City Manager Paul Brady said Wednesday that a precautionary landing by a Marine Corps helicopter on an Irvine farm field Oct. 21 prompted the study, which will be done by the city’s Public Safety Commission. The aircraft, based at the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin, experienced transmission trouble.

“There is a series of (helicopter) routes that travel over our city,” Brady said. The Tustin base borders on Irvine.

The council voted 4 to 0 to order the study, Brady said. But he pointed out that the city has no jurisdiction over military flights.

Council member Sally Anne Miller said there has been “a fair number” of complaints in recent weeks about helicopters straying from assigned flight patterns. She said the council hopes to use the study as a basis for “raising the awareness” of the Marine Corps to noise and safety concerns of Irvine residents.
