Azinger Shoots 65 for 2-Stroke Lead Over Love in Hawaii
Paul Azinger birdied seven of the first 11 holes en route to a seven-under-par 65 Thursday to take a two-stroke lead over Davis Love III with a 36-hole total of 135 in the $600,000 Kapalua International golf tournament.
Love, who shared the first-round lead with England’s Nick Faldo at 68, fired a 69 for a 137 total. Faldo shot a 71 and shared third place at 139 with Tom Purtzer, who had 71-68.
Andy Bean held down fifth place with a 72-68--140, and Mike Hulbert shared sixth place at 141 with Ben Crenshaw, who made up 11 strokes over his previous day’s round of 76.
A brisk wind continued to blow over the 6,879-yard Kapalua Bay Course on the island of Maui, but it was nowhere near Wednesday’s gale-like conditions when gusts were measured up to 50 m.p.h.
