Two small planes collided in the air while on approach to Corona Municipal Airport on Saturday, crashing onto a runway and injuring two men, police said.

Charles McCormick, 23, of Laguna Hills and Steven Lund, 39, of Santa Ana were in fair condition at the Corona Community Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said. Both suffered scrapes, cuts and bruises.

Hartly Folstad, 53, of Altadena was unhurt.

Lund was piloting a Swift GC-1 aircraft toward the east end of the runway when a Steerman biplane piloted by Folstad also started a landing approach directly above Lund’s plane, Corona police Sgt. Alex Marmolejo said.

The collision occurred about 25 feet above ground and both planes crashed on the runway, Marmolejo said. McCormick was a passenger in the biplane.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the collision.
