Fullerton Scores in Final Minute for a 39-38 Victory Over Pacific

Rick Calhoun scored on a 12-yard run with a minute to play, and Ronnie Barber passed to Todd White for the two-point conversion as Cal State Fullerton pulled out a 39-38 victory over Pacific in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game Saturday.

Pacific drove to the Titan 28 with nine seconds to play, but a 45-yard field goal try by Ken Norgaard was wide to the left.

Calhoun, a senior running back, rushed for 228 yards in 21 carries, including a 76-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Fullerton finished the season 2-5 in the PCAA and 3-9 overall. Pacific fell to 2-5 and 4-6.

The teams amassed 1,164 yards in total offense. Pacific rolled up 434 yards rushing and 185 passing, and Fullerton rushed for 312 yards and passed for 233.

In a game that saw two ties and two lead changes, Pacific took a 21-17 halftime lead. Fullerton’s John Gibbs caught touchdown passes of 5 and 19 yards, and Pacific’s Booker Guyton grabbed scoring passes of 14 and 34 yards.

After Pacific went ahead, 31-23, on a five-yard pass from Hue Jackson to Scott Morrison late in the third period, Fullerton tied the game moments later on a three-yard pass from Barber to tight end Jim Thornton and a two-point run by Barber.

The Tigers took their final lead with 7:29 left on a 9-yard run by Richardson before the Titans drove 98 yards in 16 plays to win it.
