Orange : Collision on Freeway Triggers 10-Car Pileup
- Share via
A car drifted onto the shoulder of the Costa Mesa Freeway early Saturday and struck a car that had stopped there, eventually causing a 10-car pileup scattered across three freeway lanes, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Officers said that only one person was injured, Annabell Samano, 26, of Orange, a passenger in the parked car. She was listed in serious condition at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.
The driver of the car that caused the pileup ran from the scene and has not been caught, officers said Sunday. They estimated that the car had been traveling at 50 m.p.h.
The collision on the shoulder deflected the moving car into the middle southbound lane of the freeway just south of Chapman Avenue, where it struck another car.
Seven other cars trying to avoid the pileup collided in the high-speed and car-pool lanes, officers said.
