A week of festivities commemorating the 50th birthday of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was capped by an elaborate fireworks show that caused massive gridlock on both sides of Bay for several hours. About 1,000 boats also crowded into the area near the Ferry Building at the foot of the bridge to watch the 20-minute pyrotechnic display, the Coast Guard said. At the height of the traffic jam, major roads leading into San Francisco were jammed for more than 12 miles from the Bay Bridge to the Carquinez Bridge in Contra Costa County, and from the Golden Gate Bridge to Corte Madera in Marin County, the California Highway Patrol said.
