A Marine died early Monday in Oceanside when he was run over by a semi, Oceanside police reported.
The man, identified by coroner’s deputies as Lance Cpl. Roderick Ellis Long Jr., 22, apparently was sleeping beneath the truck when the accident occurred, said Sgt. Bill Krunglevich, Oceanside police spokesman.
The truck, driven by Donald May, 33, of Grants Pass, Ore., had been parked near the corner of Mission Avenue and Tremont Street for several hours while May slept in the cab, Krunglevich said. Shortly before 3 a.m., May awoke to deliver his cargo of lumber to Camp Pendleton. He reported feeling a bump as the truck pulled away from the curb and then found Long’s body under the truck, Krunglevich said.
May will not be charged in the accident, which is still being investigated, police said.
