Alhambra : General Plan Approved
The City Council has approved a revised general plan that reduces the number of condominiums and apartments that can be built in Alhambra, cutting the potential population from 120,000 to below 93,000. The city’s current population is estimated at 71,304.
The plan was adopted by a 4-1 vote with Councilman Michael Blanco dissenting on grounds that the revision did not go far enough in limiting population growth.
The council approved the plan generally as recommended by the city Planning Commission, with one major change, reducing the number of residential units that can be built in the downtown area from 43 units an acre to 30.
About 55% of the city is zoned for multiple-family residential use. The plan reduces the number of units that can be built per acre in each multi-family zone.
City Manager Kevin Murphy said the reduced density is a response to population growth that has caused traffic congestion and overcrowded local schools.
