San Diego Section Playoff Roundup : Coronado Rallies to Defeat USDHS in Water Polo, 7-6

Alex Fraley scored with 1:31 remaining to give Coronado a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over University of San Diego High School in the semifinals of the water polo championships at Mesa College.

USDHS (19-6-1) led, 6-3, early in the third period but Coronado (22-6) rallied, shutting down the Dons during the final 11:06. Aaron Armstrong scored two goals and goalie Eric Buckstaler recorded 19 saves to lead USDHS. Ed Becker scored two goals to lead Coronado.

Valhalla (22-1) dominated Vista, 19-4, in the other semifinal behind five goals apiece by Will Schnorr and Mike Allen. Valhalla took an 11-2 lead at the half. Vista fell to 19-4. Valhalla will meet Coronado in the championship match at 8 p.m. Saturday at UC San Diego.

TENNIS

Sixth-seeded Laura Richards of Vista pulled the first upset of the girls’ individual tennis championships, defeating top seeded Cammy Foley of Bonita Vista, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5, in the quarterfinals. Richards won the tiebreaker, 7-4. Both the second-round and quarterfinals were played Thursday.

In quarterfinal play, No. 2 Shannon Crockett of The Bishop’s School defeated No. 5 Carla Quaresma of Poway, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4; No. 3 Veena Prabhakar of Bonita Vista escaped with a 2-6, 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 victory over No. 9 Zarina Galvan of Hoover, and No. 4 Mimi Burgo of University City swept No. 7 Linda Allred of Torrey Pines, 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles action, the top-seeded team of Connie Carbone and Karen Price of Bonita Vista won, 6-0, 6-4, and No. 2 Francois Barton and Hana Ohkawa of La Jolla won, 6-0, 2-6, 7-5, in the quarterfinals. Third-seeded Julie Fisel and Corinna Roth of Fallbrook won, 6-1, 6-0, and No. 4 Karen Macaulay and Renee Pirotte of Bonita Vista swept their match, 6-2, 6-4.

VOLLEYBALL

The Taeatafa sisters, Karen and Carolyn, combined for 30 kills and 16 blocks to lead Sweetwater (30-1) over Mount Carmel, 15-8, 9-15, 15-7, 15-13, in the semifinals of the girls’ volleyball championships. Sweetwater will meet undefeated Poway (22-0) in the final Saturday at 7 p.m. at Point Loma.

Poway defeated San Dieguito, 15-2, 15-7, 15-7, as setter Charry Korgel led undefeated Poway into the finals. Korgel time after time pulled the ball out of the net to lead to Poway points. San Dieguito (23-11) was led by the Palomar League’s player of the year, Janelle Lantagne, who had 18 kills in the three games.

It was the third time this year that Poway had defeated San Dieguito, and the victory was by the widest margin.

The loser of the 3-A final match will play the loser in the 2-A match Monday to determine which team gets an at-large entry to the state tournament. That entry most likely will meet the country’s top-ranked team, MiraCosta.

In the 2A semifinals:

Amy Randel had 20 kills and 10 blocks and Alison McGee added 10 kills to lead top-seeded La Jolla (21-7) past Christian, 15-11, 15-11, 4-15, 15-13, at University City High. Christian finished 23-5. La Jolla will meet University of San Diego High in the 2-A final Saturday at 5 p.m. at Point Loma. USDHS (18-5) beat Marian, 15-7, 15-8, 15-13, Thursday. Jenna Borer had 16 kills and Ann Sperrazzo served six aces to lead the Dons. La Jolla and USDHS met three times during the regular season, with La Jolla winning two of the three.

FIELD HOCKEY

Fallbrook defeated San Marcos, 2-0, to advance to the finals of the field hockey championships against seven-time defending champion Serra. Melissa McNutt and Sherri Siegfield broke a scoreless tie with goals in the second half to lead Fallbrook (16-3).

Serra won its 86th straight game, defeating Mira Mesa, 2-0.
