Anaheim : Chemicals Near School Moved to Industrial Site

More than 900 gallons of chemicals that had been stored at a residence next to Sunkist Elementary School were safely moved to an industrial area Saturday, fire officials reported.

If the chemicals, used to make metallic finishes, had not been moved by Sunday, Sunkist Elementary School might have been closed. “It was not a real major problem, but they could not be left next to a school,” county Fire Marshal Michael Doty said.

Fire officials discovered the chemicals Friday after an employee of Med-Mar Metals complained at UCI Medical Center of breathing difficulties.

James M. Beatty used a private chemical company to move ten 55-gallon drums, sixty 5-gallon containers and eighty 1-gallon containers Saturday from his residence in the 300 block of Sunkist Street. The chemicals included benzene and nitric acid.
