Tight end Robert Awalt, San Diego State’s second-leading receiver, should be able to play Saturday against Brigham Young despite a sprained left ankle.

“He won’t do much in practice, but we expect him to play,” trainer Don Kaverman said. “It’s just not that severe. There is no swelling or limitations in his motion. If you looked at it, you wouldn’t think anything was wrong unless you talked to the guy.”

Awalt was injured when he was inadvertently stepped on by a teammate in the first quarter of SDSU’s 35-5 victory against Hawaii Saturday. He suffered the same injury to the same ankle five weeks before at Texas El Paso.

The week after the UTEP game, Awalt caught 3 passes for 20 yards in a 22-10 loss against the Air Force Academy.

“This is not as painful as it was the Monday of the Air Force game, but it doesn’t feel real stable,” Awalt said Monday. “It’s still really sore. If it’s left up to me, I’ll play as long as it won’t hurt myself or the team. If it feels like it did against Air Force, I might take myself out on certain plays. I was stubborn about taking myself out of that game.”

This season, Awalt has caught 42 passes for 521 yards and 2 touchdowns. Fullback Corey Gilmore leads the Aztecs with 44 receptions for 297 yards and a touchdown.

Awalt has been selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl.
