J. Parker Williams, who is in his third term on the City Council, became mayor this week under a system that rotates the office among council members every nine months.

Williams, 49, who owns an industrial development company, succeeds Michael Messina, whose term on the council will end Monday. Messina will be succeeded on the council by his wife, Barbara, who won election on Nov. 4.

Councilwoman Mary Louise Bunker became vice mayor this week and will advance to mayor in August.
