Police fired on a man in a drug raid Tuesday night after he allegedly tried to run over two police detectives from the City of Orange, authorities said Wednesday.

Robert Scott Sherman, 25, of Orange, who was not struck by the police bullets, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and possession of cocaine, Orange police spokesman Bob Gustafson said. He later was released after posting a $25,000 bond.

Three other suspects were arrested on drug-related charges when police discovered an ounce of cocaine with an estimated street value of about $1,700 at a residence in the 5200 block of Tango Circle in Anaheim.

Gustafson said detectives from Orange, backed up by Anaheim police officers, served a search warrant at the residence, and Sherman, who was parked outside, tried to flee in a car.

Police said he tried to run over two detectives standing in the street, prompting the detectives to fire two rounds each. Three rounds struck the car Sherman was driving.

Sherman, police said, continued in the Toyota Celica for about a block. When he assertedly tried to ram a marked Anaheim police car, he apparently lost control of his car and crashed into a planter at a home on Woodwind Street. Gustafson said police later found an ounce of cocaine in the vehicle.

Others arrested in the 9:17 p.m. raid were identified as Michael T. Sharpe, 28, who lives at the residence raided; Gregory R. Hernandez, 26, of Orange, and a fourth person who has yet to be identified, Gustafson said. All three were booked on suspicion of selling cocaine and possession of cocaine for sale.
