Defensive lineman Charles Martin of the Green Bay Packers, who is appealing a two-game suspension for slamming Chicago Bear quarterback Jim McMahon to the turf, said he now regrets the incident.

“I didn’t realize how bad it was until the media and TV and all that stuff was showing it every day,” Martin said.

McMahon, who has a torn rotator cuff and will be out for the season, was placed on the injured reserve list.

Martin said he has had trouble dealing with the controversy surrounding the incident. “I haven’t slept well in a couple days,” he said. “It’s like committing a terrible crime. I don’t want to say murder, but it’s something that’s been real hard for me, you know?”
