ATLANTA — Brad Gilbert upset two-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, Wednesday night in the second round of the $500,000 AT&T; Tennis Challenge.
Earlier, John McEnroe defeated Sweden’s Mats Wilander, 6-4, 6-3; Czechoslovakia’s Ivan Lendl downed France’s Yannick Noah, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, and Czechoslovakia’s Miloslav Mecir beat Sweden’s Mikael Pernfors, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Becker beat McEnroe the previous night and said that had an effect on his performance.
“With the hard match yesterday, today seemed to have been a letdown,” he said. “The pressure wasn’t there as it was yesterday, and a lack of concentration cost me too many unforced errors. It was simply a bad match for me and a good win for him.”
Lendl is 2-0 in the round-robin tournament. McEnroe, Mecir, Becker, Wilander, Gilbert and Noah are 1-1, with Pernfors 0-2.
