Glendale Cat Show May Be the Purr-fect Sunday Outing

Sunday, 165 of the most pampered and prized cats in Southern California will strut their stuff (well, as close to strut as cats do) at the All Breed Cat Show at the California National Guard Armory in Glendale. Better than a trip to the pet shop, it’s a chance to see felines with bloodlines, some in outfits to match the decor of their cages: One might wear pink satin and sit in a Louis XVI room-cage, another might show up in jungle motif.

For families with a cat in their future this Christmas, the show is a chance to see 50 to 60 pure-bred kittens for sale by individual breeders. Orphan cats will also be available for adoption. And for families with a cat to provide for, there will be vendors with cat T-shirts (pick your breed) and cat furniture including doughnut-shaped pillows that fanciers swear their kitties adore.

Visitors can stroll the aisles of the armory to admire the cats in their cages, chat with their owners, then head for one of the six rings where judging will be conducted all day long. Rare cats such as Havana browns, Somalis and Russian blues will be on view.

The Armory is at 220 E. Colorado Blvd., Glendale; (818) 782-6080). Show time is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults, 75 cents for children. During the show, there will be a food concession selling human edibles such as goulash, spaghetti and banana cream pie.

Doo Dah Parade--Can a parade with no rose-bedecked floats, no silver-saddled equestrian units be any fun for children? Definitely. Children adapt easily. And they’ll find a precision briefcase drill team and a choreographed lawn mower ensemble just as beguiling as the adults do. More than 2,000 wacky participants--no sacred cows here--will march through the streets of Pasadena in Sunday’s 10th Occasional Doo Dah. The parade begins at noon and segues through downtown, much of it along Colorado Boulevard between Raymond and Pasadena avenues. It ends in Central Park, off Fair Oaks Avenue. Hollywood Christmas Parade--For the more traditional minded, Sunday’s 55th annual parade offers plenty of bands, floats and horses, and even more celebrities. The likes of Jimmy Stewart, Stevie Wonder and Angie Dickinson will play second fiddle to grand marshals Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Santa Claus, who brings up the rear. The two-hour event begins at 6 p.m. at Sunset Boulevard and Van Ness Avenue, goes west on Sunset Boulevard to Highland Avenue, north to Hollywood Boulevard, east to Bronson Avenue. CLASSES

“Nests, Nests, Nests”--The Sunday Open Sunday workshop at Barnsdall Park’s Junior Arts Center this week focuses on nest building. Sculptor Sara Perry will show children and their parents how to create nests from hemp, clay, palm leaves, twigs and other found objects--just like the real nest-builders do. All participants will make their own nests to take home and then work on a group nest for the center. The free workshop begins at 2 p.m. on the center’s patio, 4800 Hollywood Blvd.. Children’s Swap Meet--This junior version of a hot-and-heavy flea market is a chance for children 16 and younger to clean out their closets and under their beds, and make some Christmas money from their discarded toys, games, bikes, sporting equipment and clothing. The children display their wares on card tables and blankets and drive some pretty hard bargains. Sponsored by Golden West College in Huntington Beach, this free swap begins at 8 a.m. today and runs until 3 p.m. It takes place in the Ettinger Street parking lot of the campus, near Golden West Boulevard. THEATER

All about Santa--This weekend the Santa Monica Playhouse (1211 Fourth St., Santa Monica, (213) 394-9779) puts on a one-hour musical comedy about Santa as a young man who triumphs over his evil twin brother from the South Pole who tried to ruin Christmas. The show, performed by the Actors Repertory Theatre, is suitable for children as young as 2. Show times are today and Sunday at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. All tickets are $5. Free punch and cookies are served at intermission and candy canes are passed out after the show.
