College Basketball Roundup : Iowa Wins Great Alaska Shootout

Roy Marble scored 29 points and Jeff Moe added 26 as 10th-ranked Iowa crushed Northeastern, 103-80, Sunday night to win the ninth annual Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage, Alaska.

Iowa (3-0) set a three-day tournament scoring record with 284 points, breaking the mark of 261 set in 1983 by Oklahoma.

Marble was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Iowa led by as many as 16 points in the first half, and only 15 points by Reggie Lewis kept the Huskies (1-2) in the game.

Lewis scored 29 points, giving him 84 in three games, breaking the tournament record of 83 set in 1980 by Mike Ferrara of Colgate.

Illinois 69, Duke 62--Greg Norman scored 22 points to lead the Illini past the Blue Devils Saturday night in the championship game of the BYU-Hawaii Thanksgiving Tournament at Laie, Hawaii.

Duke (1-1) had a 62-61 lead when Glynn Blackwell’s layup with 41 seconds left started an eight-point run by Illinois (2-0).

Georgetown 84, Washburn 55--Reggie Williams scored a career-high 39 points to lead the No. 18 Hoyas to victory in the championship game of the Hilo Classic at Hilo, Hawaii.

Williams, named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, scored 27 points in the first half to stake the Hoyas (2-0) to a 42-26 lead. Washburn is 4-1.

N.C. State 94, Utah State 82--Kenny Drummond scored 24 points and Bennie Bolton added 20 as the 17th-ranked Wolfpack beat the Aggies to take third place in the Great Alaska Shootout.

Reid Newey scored 19 points for the Aggies (1-2), hitting five three-point shots. Charles Shackleford added 19 points for the Wolfpack (3-1).

Texas 74, Louisville 70--Raynard Davis sank four free throws in the final 22 seconds and the Longhorns handed the defending national champion Cardinals their third straight defeat in the seventh place game of the Great Alaska Shootout.

Louisville took a 70-68 lead on a three-point play by Herbert Crook with 3:12 left, but Texas (1-2) made six straight free throws to win.

Alaska Anchorage 77, Washington 75--Hansi Gnad’s hook shot over Chris Welp, his teammate on the West German national team, in the final minute gave the Seawolves fourth place in the Great Alaska Shootout.

Welp finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds for Washington (1-2), while Gnad had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Anchorage (2-1).

Missouri 71, Cal State Long Beach 58--Junior forward Derrick Chievous scored 23 points to lead the Tigers past the 49ers for third place in the Silversword Invitational at Wailuku, Hawaii.

Tony Ronzone scored 13 points to help bring the 49ers (1-2) back from a 13-point deficit to a 56-52 lead with 6:35 left, but the Tigers (2-1) outscored Long Beach, 17-2, the rest of the way.

Villanova 96, Vermont 68--Kenny Wilson made all 7 shots he took and scored 18 points as the Wildcats won for the second time in three games by beating the Catamounts at Villanova, Pa.

Joe Calavita had 21 points and 13 rebounds for Vermont (0-2).
