Harbor Gateway : Man Held in Death of Horse
A man arrested after he allegedly dragged his horse to death behind his pickup will be arraigned Dec. 30 in Compton Municipal Court, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.
Edward Hardwick, 46, of Los Angeles, who last Friday night was booked on suspicion of felony cruelty to animals, was released after posting $1,000 bail, deputies said.
Deputies arrested Hardwick at Alondra Boulevard and Main Street. Hardwick told deputies the dapple-gray appaloosa had died two days earlier. Then he changed his story and said it had fallen off the back of his pickup, deputies said.
The deputies arrested him after an animal control officer determined the horse had died only a short time earlier after suffering massive trauma from being dragged along a rough surface. Investigators surmised that the horse had been hitched to the back of the truck and was unable to keep up.
Hardwick told deputies he was taking the horse from a stable to an animal shelter, deputies said. Hardwick could not be reached for comment.
