ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Boys’ Roundup : It Takes 4 Overtimes, but Magnolia Beats Buena Park

Forward Mike Goff scored 20 points and center Mark Lyon added 19 to lead Magnolia High School to an 81-74 victory in four overtimes over Buena Park in a nonleague game at Magnolia Wednesday night.

The game took three hours and 15 minutes.

The Centinals (1-0) built a seven-point lead at halftime, but Buena Park (0-1) tied the score, 51-51, after three quarters. Both teams scored 17 points in the fourth period.

The score was tied, 64-64, after the first overtime, 68-68 after the second and 70-70 after the third. The Centinals outscored the Coyotes, 11-4, in the final overtime period.

Buena Park center Kevin Grady, a 6-foot 4-inch transfer from Jordan in Los Angeles, led the Coyotes with 20 points. Forward Gary Hunter added 19.

In other nonleague games:

Fountain Valley 43, Compton 42--Tom Weaver’s free throw with 16 seconds remaining was the difference at Fountain Valley. Weaver led Fountain Valley with 12 points.

Irvine 48, Savanna 39--Mike Herring had 14 points to lead Irvine in the season opener for both teams. Mike Campbell had 22 points and 9 rebounds for Savanna.

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

University 87, Whitney 62--Steve Stolzoff scored 23 points to lead the Trojans. Center Lasse Glassen scored 16 points and had 14 rebounds for University (2-0). Guard Carl Caldwell scored 13 points and had eight assists.

In the Gahr-Cerritos tournament:

St. Anthony 89, Kennedy 72--Guard Darrick Martin scored 39 points to lead the Saints. Martin, a junior guard, scored 23 points in the first half. Kennedy’s Mike Keith scored 19 points to lead the Irish.

In the Garden Grove tournament:

Laguna Hills 44, Loara 41--The Hawks (1-1) built a 39-26 lead the consolation quarterfinal after three quarters but lost two starters on fouls, went cold in the fourth period and had to hold off a strong finish by the Saxons (0-2).

Pacifica 67, Garden Grove 57--Alan Bruce had 22 points to lead the Mariners. Garden Grove’s Octavio Contreras led all scorers with 24 points. Pacifica is 2-0, Garden Grove falls to 1-1.

In the Lancer tournament:

Brethren 72, Capistrano Valley Christian 61--Chris Tatum scored 21 points and Mike Coffin added 17 to lead Brethren. Shane Meiner scored 18 points for Capistrano Valley Christian.

In the Valencia tournament:

Mater Dei 77, Lakewood 52--LeRon Ellis scored 25 points and Kevin Rembert added 15 to lead the Monarchs. Guard Erik Quigley scored 10 points, had 8 assists and 5 rebounds for the Monarchs (2-0).

Rancho Alamitos 72, El Modena 58--Craig Paquette scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Vaqueros to this consolation round victory. Randy Morales had 17 and Mark Flores added 16 points for Rancho Alamitos (1-1). The Vaqueros play Rosemead in the consolation championship. El Modena’s John Degree led all scorers with 25 points.

Rosemead 67, La Habra 63--The Highlanders (0-2) trailed by 12 in the third quarter, then rallied in the fourth before losing this consolation semifinal. La Habra’s Nelson Bergamo led all scorers with 26 points. Allan Newman added 18 for the Highlanders. Mike McDonald scored 22 points for Rosemead, which advances to the tournament’s consolation championship.
