What Is Art?

I would like to thank Bob McDonald for taking the time to review my recent show, “A Little Vegas” at Spectrum Gallery in San Diego (“At the Galleries,” Nov. 21).

Since you stated that my work is festive, “but it’s not art,” would you please be so kind to take the same time to educate me on exactly what art is? Does it only include the beautiful or the abstract? Should it exclude humor and satire? Can it be a statement about human nature?

Can you imagine, all these years I have been under the impression I was making art! Please clear up my naive misconceptions and set me on the right road.

Incidentally, your review of Mary Tomaskevitch’s show, “Pigs and People,” was cute, but it’s not criticism.
