Runners Carry Torch for Peace Into County

Share

Rainy weather failed to dim a United Nations torch representing world peace and cooperation as one of two international relay teams of runners--accompanied by local participants--made its way through Orange County on Saturday, with stops and welcoming ceremonies in various communities along the way. The symbolic runs, which began at the United Nations Plaza in New York City on Sept. 16, have thus far covered six continents, with stops along the way in such cities as Paris, Lagos (Nigeria), Moscow and Tokyo. Among the highlights were a blessing delivered by Pope John Paul II in Lyon, France, and a celebration in Shanghai attended by a million people. The runs conclude Thursday in New York where an eternal flame will be lighted to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). That organization sponsored the $1-million project to promote nutrition and health care for the world’s children. At left, the peace torch is carried down Main Street in Huntington Beach on its way to Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park. Below, Cathie Draeger carries the torch through Seacliff Village in Huntington Beach. Brief ceremonies took place both in Huntington Beach and in Buena Park. After leaving Los Angeles, the torchbearers will continue up the coast to San Francisco, then across the country to New York.
