Women’s Basketball Roundup : Southern Illinois Reappears to Haunt the Aztecs in Final

Southern Illinois held off a late San Diego State rally to win the 7th annual Dial women’s basketball tournament, 59-57, Saturday night at San Diego State’s Peterson Gym.

It was the second time in the tournament’s seven-year history that Southern Illinois (2-1) has defeated San Diego State (1-3) to win the Dial tournament. The Aztecs have won the other five Dial tournaments.

Southern Illinois led by 10 points with 3:30 left in the game when San Diego State, behind Jessica Haynes, rallied to within 2 points. However, Haynes’ missed an off-balance shot from the corner with 2 seconds left as Southern Illinois held on for the win.

Ann Kattreh and Dana Fitzpatrick scored 14 points each for Southern Illinois and Bridgett Bonds added 9. Haynes had 23 points to lead San Diego State.

In the consolation game, Monmouth College defeated Northern Arizona, 68-57.

In other action:

Point Loma Nazarene 55, Redlands 49--Shannon Anderson had 12 points and 14 rebounds as host Point Loma Nazarene College rolled past the University of Redlands. Gennie Anderson, no relation to Shannon, had 12 points and Connie Wolfe added 11 for Point Loma Nazerene (2-3). Redlands, which was late getting to the game late because its bus had been involved in a traffic accident, fell to 2-5. None of the Redlands’ players were injured in the accident.

Weber State 66, USD 58--Dawn Lawler had 15 points to pace Weber State over the University of San Diego in a game played at the Fresno State tournament. USD’s Julie Evans led all scorers with 18 points.

USIU, 89, UC Irvine 59--Amanda Spry had 25 points and 9 rebounds to lead United States International University at home. Sonya Carter also had 20 points for USIU (2-2), which outscored its opponents, 48-27, in the second half. Natalie Crawford led UC Irvine with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

USC 74, Utah 69--USC won the championship game of the Lady Ute-Rainbo tournament at Salt Lake City. Paula Pyers scored 17 points, and Hollie Ford had 16 to lead the sixth-ranked Trojans (4-1).

Utah (3-2) pulled to within one point, 70-69, with 17 seconds left, but two free throws by Karon Howell gave the Trojans a three-point lead with 10 seconds left. Two free throws by Ford with one second left.
