Police Get Armed Man to Surrender

From 30 to 40 residents of a Burbank neighborhood waited outside their homes for about four hours Sunday afternoon as police coaxed an armed man from his apartment, police said.

After the incident, which was peaceful, police arrested Lech Morawski, 35, on suspicion of shooting into an inhabited dwelling, said Burbank Police Sgt. Rick Madrid.

Police were called to the apartment building at 167 W. Linden Court about 12:07 p.m. by a neighbor who heard shooting there, Madrid said.

Upon arrival, police caught a glimpse of Morawski standing inside his apartment holding a .22-caliber rifle, Burbank Police Sgt. Mike Keeffe said.

The Los Angeles County sheriff’s special weapons team was called, and after talking to the man on the telephone, convinced him to surrender at 4:15 p.m., Madrid said.

During the standoff, police believed that the man might have been holding a hostage, but that was not the case, Madrid said.

The incident, in which Morawski fired a single shot through a neighboring apartment, apparently was precipitated by a three-way argument involving Morawski, a girlfriend and another man, Madrid said.
