College Basketball Roundup : Jones Leads St. John’s Past Seton Hall, 72-69

Shelton Jones scored 17 of his 25 points in a second-half rally that lifted St. John’s to a 72-69 victory over Seton Hall Thursday night in a Big East Conference opener at New York.

The Redmen (5-0) trailed, 36-29, when Jones led them on a surge that tied the score, 43-43. St. John’s went ahead, 46-45, on a free throw by Willie Glass, who had 19 points.

The Redmen took a 66-54 lead on two free throws by Glass with 1:36 left.

James Major had 24 points for the Pirates (4-1), hitting three three-point shots in the final minute.

Auburn 115, Austin Peay 93--Jeff Moore scored 26 points, and the seventh-ranked Tigers toyed with the Governors at Auburn, Ala.

Mike Jones added 23 points, and Chris Morris had 21 for Auburn (3-0). Lawrence Mitchell scored 19 for Austin Peay (3-3).

Oklahoma 84, Texas 65--Darryl Kennedy scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half for the ninth-ranked Sooners at Austin, Tex.

Harvey Grant added 16 points, Tim McCalister 15, David Johnson 13 and Ricky Grace 12 for Oklahoma (4-1). Patrick Fairs scored 16 points for Texas (3-4).

Central Michigan 73, Western Kentucky 65--Dan Majerle scored 23 points, and the Chippewas knocked off the eighth-ranked Hilltoppers at Bowling Green, Ky.

Western Kentucky (6-3) had also lost to Louisville Wednesday night. Clarence Martin scored 19 points for Central Michigan (3-1).

Texas Tech 69, Wyoming 61--Mike Nelson scored 18 points, and Greg Crowe added 17 as the Red Raiders surprised the 19th-ranked Cowboys at Lubbock, Tex.

Tech (2-4) snapped a four-game losing streak. Fennis Dembo scored 31 points for Wyoming (4-1).

Syracuse 66, St. Bonaventure 52--Sherman Douglas scored 20 points, and the 12th-ranked Orangemen overcame the Bonnies at Buffalo, N.Y., for their sixth victory without a defeat.

Patrick Allen scored 16 points for St. Bonaventure (2-3).

Notre Dame 81, Eastern Michigan 76--David Rivers scored 6 of his 24 points in overtime, and the Irish turned back the Hurons at South Bend, Ind.

Rivers made four free throws as the Irish (3-2) pulled away in the final 2:26 of overtime. Mike McCaskill had 23 points for the Hurons (3-4).

Iowa State 79, Northern Iowa 60--Tom Schafer scored 22 points, and Jeff Grayer added 21 as the Cyclones breezed past the Panthers at Ames, Iowa.

Iowa State (4-1) has won 21 consecutive games at Hilton Coliseum. Kirk Francis scored 18 points for Northern Iowa (2-3).

UTEP 61, New Mexico State 58--Chris Blocker scored 21 points, including two free throws with 1:22 left at Las Cruces, N.M., and the Miners halted the Aggies’ winning streak at five games.

Kenny Travis scored 16 points for New Mexico State (5-2) but missed a jumper with six seconds left that would have tied the score. Travis fouled out going for the rebound, and Wayne Campbell hit one of two free throws for UTEP (5-1).

Utah 65, Weber State 63--Mitch Smith scored 18 points, including the game-winning free throws with 56 seconds left, to boost the Utes to victory at Salt Lake City.

Smith also had 18 rebounds for Utah (4-2). Harry Willis scored 20 points for Weber State (1-5).
