Toll to Coronado Extended to July 1
The California Transportation Commission voted Thursday to keep the current Coronado Bridge toll of $1.20 until July 1.
The transportation board approved the recommendation so that, during the interim period, the California Department of Transportation can analyze methods to ease traffic between the bridge and North Island Naval Air Station. The City of Coronado, which has sought to build a tunnel to the naval station, had strongly supported the additional work by the Department of Transportation.
Some of the alternatives to be studied include an elevated, reverse-flow, two-lane expressway; landscaping development, and the tunnel, said Gerry Meis, chief of the office of toll and commute management.
The commission also accepted the recommendation so the City of Coronado could finish its traffic study.
The toll is collected only from traffic headed to Coronado; drivers may leave town for free.
